The Legend of Mackinac Bridge

The Mackinac Bridge opened in 1957 and connects the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan.

Mackinac derives from the Indian word Michilimackinac, meaning “island of the great turtle.”

Gov. G. Mennen William began the tradition of the govenor leading the Labor Day Mackinac bridge walk across the bridge.
